Thanks to my place of work, Deutsche Bank provided me with 4 tickets for the entire weekend of the eurosport super racing weekend. consisting of 3 major race series including the European Touring Car Championship, Super Production Championship and more excitingly the FIA GT Championship.
Although the ETCC and the SPC consisted of some very exciting races (most cars had almost identical power outputs) the cream of the day was the GT cars. Comprising of many cars we know through our adulation of supercars, these were just a joy to watch. The sound of these cars, especially, was at some points painful and no doubt, dangerous especially considering the 3 hours the GT race takes.
In order of preference:
Ferrari F550 GT – Just the absolute best looking cars on the circuit, and also one of the best performers (5th).
Lister Storm – These things were infinitely more powerful than anything else on the track. Keeping up on bends whilst destroying on the straights all oponents. Sadly, 5 minutes from lead they were forced to retire with steering problems.
Ferrari 360M GT – 2 of these, together with one viper, the best sounding cars there. even better than the stock car, if thats possible. (7th / 13th)
Porsche 996 GT2/3 – Quite a few of these, certainly the meanest sounding bastards on the track and providers of the closest fought battles throughout the day, especially with the 360’s.
Dodge Viper – Apart from the Storm’s, the Vipers were the most dominant of the classes. Ferouciously fast with a fantastic soundtrack.
Porsche 993 GT2 – A lone 993 GT2 was playing quite competitively with its younger siblings and was showing them a trick or two too.
We were also privaledged to have fantastic weather, enough to chomp down on 2 ice creams anyway. I cannot understand, however, why there were so few people there, litteraly something like 10% of capacity. To me, the races were far more exciting than F1, they were cars I could associate myself with and cars I see everyday. Glory boys comes to mind.
I shall certainly make a point of appearing at more of these race series’ in the future.
