Annihilation (2018)

What an utter, utter gem of a movie.

A group of all female academics are pulled together by a government initiative to explore and respond to an anomaly that is growing in size and influence off the coast. As they get closer to the epicenter, whilst learning more of the characters, we’re also learning how much impact the anomaly has had in the surrounding countryside with mutations and paranormal entities creating havoc in the wilderness.

If you’re familiar with Stalker (if not, then please stop reading and go watch this masterpiece), then you’ll recognise the subtle influences.

I really don’t want to give away too much from one of the best movies I’ve seen in many years, but Portman stars in this sublime, visually arresting piece that will have you contemplating for days.

There’s much online discussion around the concept and meaning of the movie but I guarantee you by the end you’ll have drawn your own personal conclusions.

A solid 9/10
